It is winter and we expect rain but it's been a ridiculous year weather-wise, which continued on Gisborne sports fields over the weekend.

The Ngatapa-OBM Poverty Bay Premier club rugby game at Patutahi's Paddy Park turned into a mudbath, with spectators at time finding it hard to distinguish which team was which.

OBM overcame the conditions to win comfortably, thanks to a superior second-half display.

Hockey is played on a water-based artificial turf but when the heavens opened up on Saturday afternoon, play was called off at Harry Barker Reserve.

Paikea and GMC Kowhai women managed to get a game in earlier, and it was a cracker, with Paikea sneaking home 2-1.

Weather doesn't matter in the comfort of the YMCA, which Premier Grade netballers no doubt appreciate.

Two games were played on Saturday morning, including Horouta Koura v Farmlands Ngatapa. Horouta enjoyed a big win.

Saturday's wet-weather experience is set to be repeated again this weekend unless grounds are deemed too wet for play.
