Gisborne swimmer Michael Pickett’s Summer Youth Olympics campaign is over after he was eliminated in the semifinals of the 100 metres freestyle in Buenos Aires yesterday.
The 16-year-old advanced to the semifinals with a time of 50.89 seconds — the 10th-fastest time of the 16 qualifiers.
He reduced that to
50.86s in his semi — 0.09s off the New Zealand 16yr boys’ age-group record he set in the mixed 4x100m relay earlier at the Games — but it was not enough to make the final.
Pickett was eighth in his semi, won by Brazilian Andre Luiz Calvelo de Souza in 49.87s.
Pickett made the semifinals of the 50m freestyle earlier in the week.
