POVERTY Bay-East Coast are on the board.

The bottom-ranked province at the national men’s golf interprovincial in Invercargill pulled off a minor shock this morning in sharing the honours 2½-all with hosts Southland.

PBEC No.2 William Brown notched his first win of the week-long matchplay tournament, beating Scott Hellier 2-up.

No.3 Peter Kerekere made it three consecutive wins with a 2 and 1 victory over Jeremy Hall.

No.5 Andrew Higham halved with Sam Brinsdon.

New Zealand international Vaughan McCall proved too strong for PBEC No.1 Nathaniel Cassidy, the pair shaking hands on the 15th.

PBEC No.4 and team manager Tony Akroyd lost 2 and 1 to Tegan Proudfoot.

The half-point lifted PBEC off the bottom of their eight-province group. They are now above Aorangi, who lost 4-1 to Canterbury.

PBEC have a bye tomorrow morning then finish the tournament with a clash against Aorangi.

Other round 5 scores: Waikato 4½ North Harbour ½, Bay of Plenty 3 Manawatu-Wanganui 2, Northland 4 Taranaki 1, Otago 4 Hawke’s Bay 1, Wellington 3 Auckland 2.
