Poverty Bay teams got their under-13 hockey tournaments off to winning starts yesterday.

The Poverty Bay girls team beat Manawatu 4-0 on the opening day of the Rawleigh Trophy at Gisborne’s LJ Hooker Turf.

Keeley Smiler scored two goals and Jade Martin and Nasya Battin one each.

Poverty Bay boys outgunned Horowhenua 8-0 at the Curtis Cup tournament in Napier.

William Matthews hit the turf running, with four goals, while John Broad, Matt McKendry, Bjorn Haraki and Sam Gaddum scored one apiece.

The Rawleigh Trophy features 10 teams in two pools. Poverty Bay are in Pool A with Manawatu, Wellington, Horowhenua and Hawke’s Bay Futures. Pool B features Rangitikei, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Taranaki and Wellington Futures.

In other Rawleigh Trophy games yesterday, Hawke’s Bay Futures beat Horowhenua 6-2, Wairarapa beat Rangitikei 3-1 and Hawke’s Bay beat Wellington Futures 3-0.

Poverty Bay had a bye this morning and faced Hawke’s Bay futures in the afternoon.

The Curtis Cup comprises 10 teams. Poverty Bay are in Pool A with Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Horowhenua and Wellington Futures. Pool B are Wellington, Rangitikei, Taranaki, Manawatu and Whanganui.

Poverty Bay faced Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay today.
