THE match-ups between GMC Gold and Gisborne Girls’ High and Paikea and YMP B are ones to watch this weekend in the fifth round of Poverty Bay club hockey.

Paikea play YMP B at 7.30pm tomorrow night and Girls’ High have a date with GMC Gold at 2.45pm on Saturday.

“The Paikea-YMP game should be the closest contest of the round,” says commentator Tony Scragg. “While YMP would be slightly favoured to win, Paikea will be out to prove a point. They have struggled for points so far through the season but are a better team than that.”

Scragg says Saturday’s contest between Girls’ High and GMC Gold will be close.

“Girls’ High are getting better and are looking for their first win of the competition.”

The fifth round starts tonight and YMP A will provide a tough night at the office for LOB Masters from 6pm on the LJ Hooker Turf at Harry Barker Reserve.

“The Masters are up against the most in-form team in the competition and it will be a pure defensive effort from them,” Scragg says.

In the other men’s match tonight (7.30pm) Gisborne Boys’ High School will have their hands full with THC.

“THC had a big win last weekend and while Boys’ High are improving, I think THC will be too hot to handle,” Scragg says.

The women start their round tomorrow night with unbeaten YMP A taking the turf against Te Aowera at 6pm.

“The YMP women will stay unbeaten. The only unknown is by how much,” Scragg says. “TA defended well last weekend but they will be tested tomorrow night.”

Ben Holden Fencing Ngatapa and GMC Green start the Saturday games at 1pm.

The Green Machine return to the women’s competition after a bye and a default result, which has meant two weekends without play. They meet a Ngatapa outfit coming off two good wins in which they scored 15 goals.

“It will really test out the Ngatapa defence,” Scragg said. “I do not think GMC will have been disadvantaged at all by having two weeks off.

“I feel the Green Machine should win it but the margin remains to be seen.”

The men’s match between YMP B and LOB A completes the round at 4.30pm.

“YMP will probably be on the receiving end of an LOB backlash after their loss last weekend,” Scragg says.
