Ormond Te Wharau won the boys' round robin and Hinemoana (Horouta Wananga) won the girls' at the 2022 Primary School Interschool Badminton Competition held at the Badminton Centre this month.

Schools taking part were Te Wharau, Waikirikiri, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Horouta Wananga and Central, along with one player from Ormond.

“Miscommunication” resulted in two schools missing out, and illness caused one school to pull out.

Separate competitions were run for boys and girls, with teams of four playing doubles in a round-robin competition.

Thanks were extended to Albie Nepia, from Waikirikiri, who co-ordinated the day, and the student leaders from Waikirikiri, who umpired for the day.

Teachers, learning support staff, parents and Badminton Eastland volunteers also contributed to the success of the day.

Teams were exceptionally competitive, while players were enthusiastic and ready to learn and try new skills. They enjoyed their matches, and the sportsmanship was “fantastic”.
