GISBORNE Intermediate teams came away with a first placing, two seconds and a third at the Bay of Plenty-Poverty Bay Intermediate Schools Winter Tournament held in Tauranga and Mt Maunganui.

The Gis Int boys’ and girls’ teams played each other in the hockey final, the boys winning 3-0.

The boys had beaten Whakatane in the semifinal after a scoreless game had gone to “drop-offs”, where both teams lose a player every 30 seconds until someone scores. It was down to one on one, and those players got so tired the managers agreed to change them. Shortly afterwards, Gis Int scored.

They also beat Mt Maunganui Green (twice), Whakatane Mixed and Te Puke Silver.

The girls had reached the semifinals with two wins and a loss, and in the semi they beat the team who had beaten them in pool play, Tauranga Boys, 1-0.
