The Poverty Bay-East Coast winning indoor bowls team with the Bill Moore and Sunshine trophies in Whakatane. Poverty Bay-East Coast indoor bowlers started the representative season with a trip to Mount Maunganui to play Tauranga, Thames Valley and King Country.
Although the team started the day poorly — picking up only 29 points from a possible 72 — they knuckled down to score 41 in Round 2and 36 from a possible 56 in the last round of the day to place second behind Tauranga.
PBEC also play for a trophy against King Country during this event — the Friendship Cup. PBEC proved too strong , running out 52-34 victors .
On Day 2, PBEC team travelled to Whakatane to contest the Bill Moore Trophy against Rotorua, Whakatane and Thames Valley.
Again PBEC started slowly but hit their stride halfway through the day.
With one round of fours left in the competition, PBEC were only one point behind leaders Whakatane.
The last round was a tense battle against the other three associations. All PBEC players knew the situation and it brought out the best in them, with some great shots played.
Remarkably, PBEC won all four of their fours games to win the Bill Moore Cup with a total of 88.5 points against the other three associations, and the Sunshine Trophy, from a 31-25 win against Whakatane.
