FIFTEEN-year-old Kaia Matenga played superbly to win the Village Butchery Centre Closing Trios with his nan Lois Lamont and David Lynn for the second year running.

In the nine-end final against Jay Casey, Leighton Shanks and Ada Clapperton, Casey’s team got the better start to be 3-2 up after four ends.

On End 5, Lytton High School student Matenga turned it up to draw two bowls close to the kitty. Lamont followed up and, with Casey’s team not firing on that end, Lynn pounced as well. They got five shots on the end to lead 7-3 and change the game.

On End 6, Casey incurred a three-point penalty for killing the kitty, and Lynn’s team were 10-3 up.

Casey’s team then came right to score three shots on End 7 and one shot on End 8 to close it to 10-7 going into the final end.

Matenga again played close to the kitty to set up Lamont and Lynn, and Casey’s team couldn’t get close. Lynn’s team scored three shots to win 13-7.

This was Matenga’s fifth centre title, and fourth title towards a silver star. Lamont, who has had a great season, notched up her 60th centre title and Lynn earned his 137th title.

Cosmopolitan Club are the 2017 Peddle Shield interclub five-a-side winners. Team members were Hina Preddey, Warren Gibb, Nanette Treloar, Warren Gibb and Kevin Lee.

After Round 4, with one round to play, they couldn’t be beaten, so the teams shook hands.
