LEIGHTON Shanks will represent Poverty Bay-East Coast at the New Zealand Under-18 singles finals in Wellington in late August. He defeated Jareth Gaskin 12-6 in the local final.
A record 21 junior u18 bowlers took park in the event. The eight bowlers who progressed beyond the qualifying stage were Jareth
Gaskin, Taylah Munro, Oli Gillies, Lucy Shanks, Jayerion Ahu, Leighton Shanks, Nathan Trowell and Dillon Anderson.
To get to the final, Shanks defeated Ahu 12-5 in the last eight, then had a titanic battle with Trowell before winning 7-6.
Gaskin defeated Munro 10-4, then defeated one of the favourites, Lucy Shanks, in the other semifinal 7-6.
Over 30 bowlers from around New Zealand will meet in Lower Hutt in late August to find the New Zealand u18 singles champion.
