The bronze medals were in the board rescue and belt race.
“It was my first time swimming in a belt and it was a pretty cool experience,” Corrin said.
“I also made the board final and finished eighth, and I was swimming third or fourth in the surf race final until I was caught by people who got a wave behind me (she ended up 11th).”
Corrin was fifth in the ironwoman final and that was when she made up her mind to have a crack at the Nutri-Grain seriesCorrin was fifth in the ironwoman final and that was when she made up her mind to have a crack at the Nutri-Grain series.
“After a bad start in the ski leg, which left me quite far behind the field, I managed to chase them down and claim fifth, which I was rapt about.
“But I was even happier to have beaten the Nutri-Grain women’s champion (Brielle Cooper, who was sixth).
“It was the highlight of the Aussie nationals for me and gave me great confidence in pursuing my goal to become a Nutri-Grain ironwoman.”
Corrin also made two open finals as part of Northcliffe teams — the rescue tube rescue (fifth) and the surf team race (sixth).
The Gisborne Girls’ High Year 13 student has one more summer as an under-19 competitor.
“This is my last year at high school and when school finishes I hope to move over to the Gold Coast and compete as a part of Northcliffe, aiming to qualify for the Nutri-Grain series held in Australia every summer.
“However, before focussing on next year, I have a pretty exciting year coming up, having been selected to represent New Zealand twice.”
Corrin is in the New Zealand team to compete at the Sanyo Cup in Japan on June 23-24. Fellow Gisborne clubbies Cory Taylor and Casie Fyall are also in the team.
Corrin has also been selected in the Black Fins junior team for the Lifesaving World Championships in Adelaide in November. Waikanae’s Briana Irving is also in the squad,
“Any financial help I can get to do this would be much appreciated,” said Corrin, who plans to eventually move to the Gold Coast long-term to train and compete.
“Like Cory Taylor, from Midway, and Danielle McKenzie, from Mairangi Bay, I hope to join Northcliffe permanently.
“I may do it next year some time but I’m not sure just yet,” she said.
“First things first will be to have a crack at getting into the Nutri-Grain series.”
