OBR captain Ian Loffler said it was a good toss to win, with the wicket showing some effect from recent rain.
Pirates vice-captain Brad Reynolds, one of the four early wickets, said the Aberdeen Road end of the No.1 wicket at Harry Barker Reserve was wet and green.
“It (the ball) was like a tennis ball,” he said.
“It was a battle just to survive, never mind score.
“You wanted to bowl first to that end.”
But it was Jimmy Holden, bowling to the other end, who made the breakthrough. He had Olly Tilley caught behind the wicket for two.
Timoti Weir (3-45) then dismissed Andrew Aston (0), Tom Needham (1) and Reynolds (1) in quick succession at the other end.
Richie Needham made 21 but Pirates were 78-7 after a seventh-wicket partnership of 29 between Albert Tibble (14) and Dan Torrie (41 not out) ended right on drinks.
Torrie, showing a mixture of defence and attack, joined with Caleb Robinson (7) to put on 29 for the ninth wicket and then teamed up with 15-year-old Tayla Hollis (11) to put on 34 for the 10th wicket.
“I knew Pirates would fight back,’’ Loffler said.
OBR decided to attack from the outset of their innings.
Pirates still had an outside chance when Craig Christophers and Marshall Norris were both dismissed with the score on 32.
But Carmody and Weir (34) put on 107 for the third wicket.
“That is where we won the match,’’ Loffler said.
Carmody struck 12 fours in an aggressive innings.
Francis Gray was the star of the day for Horouta in their 196-run victory over Campion.
He scored a hard-hit 67 that included 13 boundaries, took 2-3 with the ball and made two catches.
Horouta chose to bat first and scored 295-9.
They lost an early wicket before skipper Brian Forde (35) and Quentin Mill (36) added 94 for the second wicket.
Campion claimed the middle-order wickets in quick time before Gray combined with Jason Brooks (15) in an 80-run stand for the sixth wicket.
Gray was then joined by annual summertime visitor, English-based cricket lover Duncan Gibson, who made 17 on debut for his new club after stints with Tatapouri-United and Ngatapa.
The two put on 50 for the seventh wicket before Jimmy Craig, also on debut, made 15no in an eighth-wicket stand of 29 with Amit Vyas (11).
Hunter Jones again led the Campion attack and took 2-42.
Sam Patterson, who has been showing promise with the ball, top-scored with 26 in Campion’s innings of 99.
Blake Taylor knocked over the Campion top order, taking 4-13, while Craig took 2-16.
HSOB batsmen Gagan Dhingra (55) and Jeremy Tucker (56) made the major contributons as their side amassed 300-9 against GBHS (2.)
Ryan Majstrovic said all of the HSOB batsmen made contributions and “enjoyed valuble time in the middle”.
Robert Schwass took 4-56 for Boys’ High.
Majstrovic said Paul Stewart’s bowling showed promise and kept the batsmen honest.
Ajay Kumar took 4-6 and Caleb Greaves 2-5 as the school side were restricted to 35.
GBHS (1) had the bye.
