An unbeaten eighth-wicket stand of 36 from Nick Greeks and Arun Kurup gave OBR a three-wicket win, with two balls to spare, against High School Old Boys in Doleman Cup cricket at Harry Barker Reserve on Saturday.

The victory took defending champions Bain Construction OBR to top spot and booked them a place in the final . . . by virtue of a 0.556 net run rate, against the Bollywood Stars HSOB rate of 0.546.

HSOB play Kevin Hollis Glass Pirates in a sudden-death semifinal this weekend.

Greeks, batting at No.7 after missing several seasons, and Kurup (No.9) held their nerve and guided OBR home.

HSOB scored 199-8 in their 40 overs, and OBR replied with 202-7.

“We bat deep with Arun at nine,” opener and elder statesman Craig Christophers said.

“He has been one of our most consistent batsmen this season.

“Nick is back after he took two years off to concentrate on fishing. He batted well. He knew he had a job to do and was restrained.”

Earlier, Ian Loffler (29 runs) and Hamish Evans (37) shared a fifth-wicket stand of 45 after Graham Hudson and Evans put on 49 runs together.

OBR had gone to drinks at 96-3. Four runs later, Hudson was caught at deep square leg by Inder Singh off the bowling of David Salmon for 32.

“It was a game that ebbed and flowed,” said Loffler, who took three wickets for 6 runs off eight overs.

“HSOB got away from us early on, then we fought back. They got away again and we finished well in the last 10 overs.”

HSOB co-captain Jak Rowe (22) and Salmon (32) gave their side a terrific start with an opening partnership of 72 off 14.3 overs before Rowe was run out by Evans.

Salmon followed eight runs later, trapped leg before wicket by Christophers.

When dangerman Robbie Tallott was out lbw to Christophers, HSOB were 87-3 after 19.3 overs of the 40.

Bruce Kerr (33) and co-captain Scott Tallott revived the innings with a 46-run stand.

Loffler broke the partnership when he had Kerr caught by Matt Cook.

The dismissal of Tallott, stumped by Loffler, was a big blow as Tallott was in fine form, having scored 32 off 41 balls.

HSOB were then restricted to 42 runs in the last 10 overs, which left OBR needing five runs an over to win.

“We wanted to make sure the run rate didn’t get out of hand,” Loffler said.

“Craig (Christophers) and Kieran (Venema) gave us a good start with an opening partnership of 38 off five overs,” Loffler said.

Venema was first to go, bowled by Singh for 13.

Singh struck again nine runs later when he had Christophers caught by Brett Armour.

Rowe then played his part when he had the hard-hitting Timoti Weir out lbw for six with the score at 51.

Hudson and Evans began to take the game away from HSOB, but then Hudson was caught by Singh off the bowling of Parminder Kulaar.

Evans and Loffler showed composure at the crease. When they were dismissed, OBR still needed 40 runs off eight overs.

On-field skipper Jonathan Purcell did not last long. He was out for four, bowled by Ajay Kumar with the total at 166.

Greeks and Kurup followed the lead of Evans and Loffler as they kept the run-rate on track and they completed the job with aplomb.

OBR 202-7 (H Evans 37, G Hudson 32, I Loffler 29, C Christophers 28, N Greeks 21 not out, A Kurup 12no; I Singh 2-29) def HSOB 199-7 (B Kerr 33, D Salmon 32, S Tallott 32, G Udall 20; I Loffler 3-26, C Christophers 2-58) by three wickets.
