“Aileen has over 50 years’ involvement in the sport as a player, selector, coach, manager and administrator, and that includes service at international, national, district and club level,” a Squash NZ spokesman said.
“Her achievements, dedication and voluntary service have been outstanding.
“Her coaching, mentoring and friendship have touched thousands of squash players throughout New Zealand, so this award was an extremely popular choice.”
Dame Susan Devoy personally expressed her gratitude to Aileen for her tireless commitment over many decades.
“Her list of achievements demonstrates her lifelong passion for not only the game, but for her genuine care and consideration of others,” Dame Susan said in a statement presented at the awards night.
“I think of Aileen as one of the stalwarts of NZ Squash and we have all benefited from her stellar work.
“It is appropriate that she is recognised by Squash NZ and I, along with everyone, wish to congratulate and thank you Aileen for your hard work, and the difference it has made to many generations of squash players.”
Aileen Buscke represented New Zealand at squash in 1968 and 1969, she managed the NZ junior women’s team to the world championships in 1989 and 1991, she was a New Zealand junior selector for 12 years and an Auckland senior selector for 10 years.
“I was a big surprise to me really,” she said.
“I don’t do it for accoladaes; I do it because I love what I do.
“My squash involvement has brought me very close to so many players over the years.”
She continues to support her younger son, Philip, aged in his late 30s, who is preparing a team for the world junior women’s championships next year.
“It’s been so great to catch up with family over this festive season; I wish I could get back here more.”
Aileen remains actively involved in squash in Auckland.
“Age is not going to stop me.”
