Swimming REPORT by IMer

It was refreshing to see our youth carrying on and doing the best they could under the restrictions implemented over the past four to five months.

“No fuss” and “just do it” attitudes reaped a high percentage of personal-best times at the Enterprise Cars Swim Team’s recent clubnight.

An exceptionally high 81 percent of personal bests of those taking part were recorded on the night.

What a wonderful breath of fresh air it was to see 60-odd young people, who have gone about their busigGoal in mind — to be the best they can be, under this great cloud of Covid-19 hanging over the world at the moment.

Let us not underestimate the great job done by the parents who have gone about life as best they can, leading these impressionable youngsters by example.

With the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay Regional Short-course Championships less than a month away, it appears the coaching team of Matt Martin, Julie McLaughlin, Jonette Maynard and Josh Taylor-Martin have their charges all heading in the right direction. It shows that bricks and mortar don’t make champions, but good old-fashioned knowhow and experience mixed with drive and determination do.

The regional champs will be collated by Swim NZ with all the other regional meets around the country to provide a national ranking database in all age groups and all strokes. This will let swimmers see where they stand nationally leading into the national short-course champs in late September-early October.

Jakob Alexander, Amelia Arthur, Isabel Arthur, Krystal Carlson, Jacob Douglas, Tyron Evans, Lachie Falloon, Ronan Gemmell, Oliver Keepa-Fitzsimons, Noah Mason, Lucy McDiarmid, Leighton McNaught, Matthew Moore, Taylor Newman, Emily Petro, Sophie Petro, Ben Plowman, William Plowman, Kaeto Sasamoto, Lachlin Spriggs, Ella Sutton, Roger Wihongi, Alyvia Williams and Brooke Williams all swam three personal bests from three swims.

We wait with bated breath to see the results of our next clubnight on August 3.
