New player shines

Barry Memorial Croquet Club’s recent “have-a-go” days might have unearthed a new star.

New player Robyn Chaffey nearly caused a few upsets in her first tournament at the club.

Chaffey and playing partner Rob Hayes lost several games by only one hoop, including their game against eventual winners Ross and Betty Thomson.

This golf croquet handicap doubles tournament was the first tournament of the summer season.

Chaffey should do very well with more experience. In fact, all but one of the games were close. Ironically, the exception was the Thomsons’ first-round 6-2 loss to Dave Newton and Christine McCullough.

After this setback, the Thomsons settled down to win their next three games.

John Wilson and Jenny Barns-Graham fought out a 6-6 draw with Newton and McCullough. This proved the crucial game of the tournament, as both pairings ended up with two wins, a draw and a loss.

A couple of other players introduced recently to the game are also joining the club and are showing a lot of potential.

Some keen competition is expected now that they have seen what Chaffey has achieved in such a short time.
