A new combination of Gisborne-East Coast bowlers – Clara Taingahue (skip), Karen Pinn, Diane Murray and Erica Tamanui-Thompson – finished fifth out of 30 teams in the two-day Invitational Women’s Paradise Fours at Ōhope Bowling Club.
On the first day they beat Raewyn Vernon’s Ōhope team 12-6,lost 9-5 to Peg Jones’s Whangamatā team and 10-9 to Colleen Metcalfe’s Ōhope team, then beat Janet Barnard’s Ngongotahā four, 12-6.
On the second day they won all three of their games: 18–6 against Pauline Bowler’s Mount Maunganui team, 20-6 against Colleen Clark’s Ōpōtiki team and 18–6 against Anne Jeffries’ Matua team.
Their five wins with a differential of +45 earned them fifth place.
Another team comprised two Gisborne East-Coast players (skip Glenys Whiteman and Dayvinia Mills) and two Bowls Napier players (Raelene Cronin and Marie Wright).
In their last game, an umpire’s measure on the final end decided the shot in their opponents’ favour. Had the measure gone the other way, Whiteman’s team would have had a draw.
