Narrow loss for GEC seniors

Bowls Gisborne-East Coast’s senior representative teams played their annual intercentre fixture against Bay of Plenty opponents at Kawerau Bowling Club.

This year Gisborne-East Coast (GEC) narrowly lost to a Bowls Waiariki team.

Members of the GEC senior men’s team were: Steve Goldsbury, Robin Jefferson, Boon McIlroy and Charlie Ure (all Gisborne Bowling Club); David File and John Dawson (both Te Karaka); George Vaotuua (Kahutia) and Ben Elkington (Tolaga Bay). Manager: Bruce Easton.

In Round 1, Goldsbury and Jefferson played singles. Goldsbury won 24-18 while Jefferson lost 18-17. File (skip) and Elkington won their pairs game 14-13. Dawson (s), McIlroy, Vaotuua and Ure won their fours game 14-9.

In Round 2, both McIlroy and Ure lost in the singles, 19-14 and 15-14 respectively. In the pairs, Dawson (s) and Vaotuua lost 18-9, while the four of Goldsbury (s), File, Elkington and Jefferson had a 13-6 win.

In Round 3, File lost his singles game 20-14. Goldsbury (s) and Ure also had a loss, 13-10, in the pairs. McIlroy (s) and Jefferson won their pairs game 17-14. Dawson (s), Vaotuua and Elkington had a 15-13 win in the triples.

The senior women’s team comprised: Mere Nepia and Jasmine Merrick (both Te Karaka); Tanya Harrison, Dayvinia Mills, Dianne Phillips and Lyn Trueman (all Gisborne); Donna Smith (Wairoa) and Joy Davis (Poverty Bay). Manager/selector: Bobbie Beattie.

In Round 1, Nepia had a 19-all draw in her singles game, while Harrison lost 25-13. Smith (s) and Davis lost 16-13 in the pairs. Mills (s), Merrick, Trueman and Phillips lost 17-5 in the fours.

In Round 2, in the singles, Phillips had a 21-all draw and Merrick won 25-12. The four of Nepia (s), Harrison, Davis and Smith lost 15-13. Mills (s) and Trueman won 22-16 in the pairs.

In Round 3, the pair of Nepia (s) and Merrick won their game, as did the triple of Davis (s), Trueman and Smith. Mills lost her singles game and Harrison (s) and Phillips lost in the pairs.

The GEC senior women’s and men’s teams produced some great bowling performances throughout the one-day tournament.

The men’s team drew with Waiariki six games each. Remarkably, after all 12 of those games were played, the total scoring differential was zero.

However, the overall winners were Waiariki, who won the tournament by two games.
