MT MAUNGANUI won the Battle of the Bays beach challenge at Midway yesterday.

The triathlon part of the competition was being held today.

Defending champions Gisborne Intermediate finished a close second in yesterday’s beach challenge, where the focus was on surf swim, board and beach relays.

Other schools taking part in the intermediate-age contest were Ilminster, Tauranga, Otumoetai, Taupo and Te Puke.

Over 140 students took part in the competition, which has been going for more than 25 years.

The beach challenge winners by age group were —

Year 8, boys: Gisborne Intermediate.

Girls: Mt Maunganui.

Year 7, boys: Ilminster.

Girls: Otumoetai.

Gisborne Intermediate deputy principal Brendon Hart said thanks were due to the families who billeted a total of 91 visiting students.

He also thanked Gisborne Intermediate staff, Midway Surf Club members, Dave Corrin and Sonia Keepa for their contributions to the smooth running of the event.
