It was a case of “so near yet so far” for the Kahutia women’s fours team at the Bowls NZ national champion of champions tournament in Hamilton at the end of last week.
The competition was played indoors at the Frankton Railway Bowling Club.
The Kahutia team of Glenys Whiteman(skip), Marie Wright, Francie Adair and Dayvinia Mills had to contend with an ageing carpet surface, substandard lighting, and some of the best women’s teams from around the country.
In their first game, on Friday morning, Kahutia were well beaten by Featherston Bowling Club 18-9. However, they won their second, against the Far North RSA four, 16-12.
They then met Dunedin’s Taieri Bowling Club in a crucial third-round game. The score was 13-all going into the last end, but Kahutia conceded four shots on that end and lost 17-13. This virtually ended their chances of qualifying for the finals on Sunday.
On Saturday, Kahutia had a bye in the morning and then played out an 11-all draw against Upper Hutt. This gave them a total of seven points, which was not enough to secure a place in Sunday’s finals.
The event was eventually won by the Taieri team, with a Hinuera four from Waikato finishing runners-up.
