MIDWAY surf life saving club athletes made every post a winner in team events at the annual ‘Mount Monster’ long distance event in Mount Maunganui at the weekend.

Dawson Building Midway fielded four teams and two of them took line honours in their respective categories.

The U19 mixed person team of Tyron Evans and Sophie Petro were too good for their rivals, streaking ahead to a convincing win, as did the U19 male duo of Jacob Corrin and Jack Lepper.

“Another U19 mixed team of Jess Fearnley and Angus Blair also competed strongly and were at the front of the race for a good portion,” said Midway head coach Matt Sutton.

“The club also fielded a young team of Maxwell Kennedy, Yahni Brown and Finn Cameron who all gained great experience in the challenging race.

“I was delighted with the teams efforts after a lengthy break from competition.

“This core group of athletes have shown real fortitude through what has been an extremely challenging 12 months and to get the results they got last weekend is a real testament to them as athletes.

“It makes me excited for the remainder of this season,” Sutton said.

He singled out Jacob Corrin as a stand out for Midway with the senior member completing the ski and swim legs of the race right up there with the fastest athletes.

Midway now looks to the Central Region Championships in Waimarama early in the New Year where they will send a group of 15 athletes to compete against some of the country’s best.
