The advantages of an artificial green were evident again when play in the McKenzie Shield Open Mixed Triples was able to go ahead at Poverty Bay Bowling Club on a sunny day after heavy overnight rain.

Three games of 90 minutes were played in the Village Butchery-sponsored tournament. The top three teams all had two wins and a loss, so it came down to ends won.

The winners, from the Gisborne Bowling Club, were George Stanley (skip), Mike Donnelly (director) and Joy McFarlane (lead), who won 18 ends.

Second were Dayvinia Mills (s), Les Whittington (d) and Tony Dobson (l), with 16 ends.

Third were Jan Powell (s), Joy Davis (d) and Jeff Davis (l), with 13 ends.
