An outstanding half-century from Poverty Bay’s exciting potential Patrick McInnes was among the batting highlights of Round 1 of the Northern Districts Rangatahi Emerging Tane (Under-19) tournament in Gisborne on Monday.

The 15-year-old made an excellent 71 off 73 balls, including nine boundaries, in the home team’s 53-run loss in a 50-overs clash at Harry Barker Reserve.

Hamilton won the toss, chose to bat and were in trouble at 101-7 before a rearguard action from No 9 batsman Kieran Nolan (50 off 70 balls including six fours and a six) got them through to 193 all-out in the 42nd over.

Pace bowler Johnny Gray took 2-12 off six overs – three of those maidens. He bowled opener Leyton Birch (1) and first drop Aditya Gulla (1).

Caleb Taewa picked up 2-33 off 7 and Jonah Reynolds got 2-32 off 7.2, and fired in an excellent throw from square leg to hit the stumps and run out Taine Grover (1).

Bekko Page got Poverty Bay off to a flying start with three consecutive boundaries in the opening over and hit five in all in his 29 off 20 balls.

Fifth man in Charlie Whitfield (18) shared a 69-run partnership with McInnes, but no one else scored in double figures.

Hudson Clarke picked up 4-30 off 7.3 overs, including bowling McInnes to end the game held in sweltering conditions.

McInnes’ performance was the second-highest knock of the day, bettered only by Northland opening batsman Tommy Litchfield’s 73 off 64 balls (12 fours, one six) in a seven-wicket win over Northern Districts Māori.

The U19 tournament runs to Friday and features eight districts – Poverty Bay, Hamilton, Bay of Plenty Coastlands, BoP Lakelands, Counties-Manukau, Northland, ND Māori and Waikato Valley.

Rounds 1 to 3 are 50-over games, followed by four T20s.
