POVERTY Bay-East Coast had a tough start to the Freyberg Masters over-40s golf interprovincial golf in New Plymouth this morning.The five-man PBEC team went down 4½-½ to Wellington on the opening day of the week-long teams’ matchplay tournament on the Ngamotu course.John Wyllie, at No.1 in the side, saved the whitewash, halving his match with Malcolm Gullery.No.2 Peter Bremner lost 6 and 4 to John Warrington; No.3 Anaru Reedy 2 and 1 to Michael Trass; No.4 Simon Jeune 2 and 1 to Darin Hiroki and No.5 Bruce Yates 6 and 5 to Frank Borren.PBEC faced defending champions Northland in the afternoon round. PBEC are still searching for their first team victory at the masters since 2009. They are seeded 15th out of the 15 provinces.
