Day 5 of the waka ama sprint nationals on Lake Karapiro yesterday was primarily about getting through heats and staying in the hunt for medals.

Only four finals were contested on the day — two of those were being corporate challenge finals — and Gisborne clubs were among those paddling for glory.

Mareikura Waka Ama Club crew Nga Tama Toa/Ease Up were third in the junior 19 men's W12 500 metres final.

YMP's Ruaohinetu won bronze in the J19 women's W12 500.

Their efforts added valuable points to their club tallies.

Heading into today's racing, Self Storage Horouta Waka Hoe remained top of the overall club standings with 163 points but what had been a commanding lead earlier in the week had shrunk, with Manukau Outrigger Canoe Club second on 133.5.

Mareikura were sixth-equal on 75 and YMP were 11th on 50.

Today's programme is predominantly W6 heats and semis, including the men's and women's premier W6 1500, along with several W12 500m straight finals.

A feature of the day are the premier men's and women's regional finals in which Gisborne paddlers will represent Te Uranga o te Ra.

Live coverage of the national champs is on Maori Television and its website.

The champs end tomorrow.
