ANOTHER dreamy place ...

Held at surf spot Red Bus in the morning and Northern Makorori in the afternoon, Sunday’s Makorori First Light Longboard Surfing Classic was a wonderful day, organiser David Timbs said.

“We had great attendance, about 75 competitors. They came from as far away as Australia, Auckland, Port Waikato and Hawke’s Bay.”

Dan Croskery, who came all the way from Australia, had returned to Gisborne to live and arrived in time for the annual longboarding competition.

The returned surfer also won the day’s top spot prize, a custom longboard shaped by Daryn Mcbride, who also created the artwork on the board.

Mcbride’s design on the deck offers a glimpse through a thicket of purple-stemmed flax plants, and the dark, vinous trunk of a pohutukawa and its red flowers, of a sunlit, tubular wave.

He wanted to capture that sense of walking to a wave break but only being able to catch glimpses of it through the bush, he told The Guide in December.

“You can see waves but not the whole thing. I wanted people to look at it and drift off into a dreamy place.”

Another expatriate who also returned to Gisborne got back just in time for the longboarding classic, Timbs said.

With clean, overhead surf at Red Bus in the morning, waves were of a “seriously good size”, while in the afternoon Northern Makorori offered smaller waves.

Conditions were excellent at both locations, Timbs said.

“It was a good mix for the day.”
