Badminton Senior Interschool Tournament - Pae Wilcox-Taylor

Badminton Senior Interschool Tournament - Pae Wilcox-Taylor

LYTTON High School won the girls' competition and Gisborne Boys' High School Red, the boys', in the inaugural junior interschool badminton tournament on Wednesday.

The Tairawhiti Area Secondary School Principals Association, in conjunction with Badminton Eastland, ran the tourney under Alert Level 2 conditions.

Three high schools took part — Lytton, Gisborne Girls' High and Gisborne Boys' High.

Teams of four played doubles in a round-robin format. The Guy and Dunsmore Cup and the Secondary School Shield were presented for the first time since 2010.

Active Rangatahi adviser Alana Karehana was delighted with the teams, who played with enthusiasm and showed good sportsmanship throughout the day.

Fair-play awards went to Lucy McDiarmid (GGHS) and James Frazer (Lytton High).

Lytton player Stella Perano earned special mention for showing great leadership in organising and managing players.

Thanks go to the schools' sports co-ordinators, Badminton Eastland's Linda White and Victoria West, the parent supporters (especially Geoff Wright, who was seen umpiring and coaching teams), and the unknown behind-the-scenes workers who made the day happen.
