GISBORNE'S Tongan community came out in force to celebrate their team’s win over the Kiwis in the Rugby League World Cup on Saturday.
The game was held in Hamilton but a crew of 40 to 50 Tongan supporters here made a big effort to get behind their team.
Dressed in
red and wielding flags and balloons while music blared, they lined part of Gladstone Road near Pak’nSave Supermarket for more than an hour following the 28-22 victory, Tonga’s first against the Kiwis.
They did not worry about the few showers of rain, and they yelled and encouraged people to toot and wave as they went by.
Tongan supporters were also seen driving up and down Gladstone Road before the game.
