CRICKET

The thunder and lightning came 30 seconds too late to save Poverty Bay from a five-wicket loss to Hamilton at the Northern Districts boys’ primary cricket tournament in Hamilton yesterday.

Poverty Bay captain Te-Reimana Gray won the toss and elected to bat first. The Bay were all out for 90 in 14.1 overs of a nine-a-side contest reduced from 40 overs to 20.

Opener Sebastian Wilson scored 22 runs from 29 balls to lead Poverty Bay’s scoring. Second-drop David Gray (11 from 15 balls) was the only other Bay batsman to reach double figures.

Off-spinner Angus Reeves (3-16 off 3.1 overs) and his captain, seamer Eli Parker (2-8 off two), were consistently accurate.

Only stout defence from George Gillies denied Parker a hat-trick in his second spell.

Hamilton’s Angus Henry carried his bat through the run chase for 26 not out, hitting a lofted on-drive for four runs and the win.

Poverty Bay captain Gray said: “We got starts in the top order but tomorrow our batsmen need to go on.

“David kept them guessing with his leg-spin despite the difficult conditions but we need more from everybody against Waikato Valley.”
