LEAH Scholefield has become the youngest person to win Eastland Port Gisborne Trampoline Club’s top trophy.

The 11-year-year Gisborne Intermediate student was voted best all-round trampolinist at the club’s end-of-season prize-giving.

“Despite being so young, Leah fully deserves the award,” said head coach Doug Callahan.

“She started trampolining when she was six. With no disrespect, she wasn’t a natural, but she has worked extremely hard to become the top-ranked trampolinist in the country in sub-junior double-mini.

“She has also represented New Zealand at the Australia national champs. Now she has her sights set on making the New Zealand team to compete at the Indo-Pacifics in Napier next year.

“If she continues to improve at the rate she is going, she’ll make the team.”

Callahan said Scholefield would move into the sub-junior international class on tramp next season.

“I was thinking of putting her up last year but decided to hold her back. She was close but not quite ready, but she’s definitely ready to move up next year.

“There are two skills in sub-junior international DM and 10 skills on tramp. It’s a huge jump but Leah will handle it. As well as her ability on the mat, Leah has a great attitude to training and enjoys coaching our younger trampolinists.

“She’s got a good rapport with them and the kids respond realy well to her.”
