Kevin Kennedy fell just short of the ultimate snooker tribute to his brothers in the recent Kennedy Shield handicap tournament.

The shield, previously known as the Suncity open tournament, was held at Gisborne Cosmopolitan Club, with 16 players vying for the silverware.

The Kennedy Shield was originally donated by brothers Don, Bob and Rex for interclub competition.

It was changed to the Suncity tournament trophy following the closure of other clubs in the district.

qualify for post-section play in the 2024 competition for the shield.

He moved into the semifinals alongside Victory Lane (21-handicap), Tony Murphy (7) and Tiny Thompson (7).

Lane beat Murphy 2-1 while Kennedy defeated Thompson 2-0.

In a closely fought final, Lane came out on top 2-1 to deny Kennedy getting his hands on his brothers’ trophy.

John Berry (7) beat Rodney Brown (7) in the flight.

Bill Raggett (7) beat John Warren (0) in the plate.

Te Rina Hawkins (28) beat Barry Jones  (21) in the consolation plate.

  • The next competition action on the Cossie tables is the handicap singles on April 13, followed by the handicap pairs on May 4.
