A $55,000 grant for the Poverty Bay Kayak Club will be put into coaching.

“We wish to continue to maximise the potential of the athletes in the Poverty Bay region and make major steps to increase the size of the club so it can remain one of New Zealand's leading clubs,” the club said in its application to the New Zealand Community Trust.

“Coaching is an essential component to the successful operation of our kayak club.”

The trust's latest round of grants exceeded $150,000.

NZCT approved $50,500 for Parafed Gisborne Tairawhiti to go towards regional development co-ordination, administration and wheelchairs.

St Mary's Catholic School was allocated $15,000 for iPads and accessories, Tikitiki School $14,850 for sports uniforms, Gisborne Girls' High School $8000 towards travel costs, Surf City Squash Club $3900 towards an online-booking and court-access system and Gisborne Youth Sports Charitable Trust $3809 to help repair water-related damage.

Gaming venues in the Gisborne region that contributed to the grants were Bar 59, Bollywood Stars, Mo's Sports Bar and Grill, ShipWreck and Sugar.
