Netball New Zealand’s junior programme, futureFERNS, got the thumbs-up from visiting Silver Fern and Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic midcourter Sam Sinclair on Friday.

Sinclair made her Silver Ferns debut in January 2017 against Australia, and has 34 test caps. She plays centre, wing attack or wing defence.

Sinclair, 24, was at Victoria Domain in Gisborne on Friday with Waikato-Bay of Plenty junior and youth lead Tash Mtakwa to show support for the futureFERNS programme.

Mother Earth futureFERNS is the netball programme for children up to Year 8. It aims to develop their netball skills and physical literacy with a progressive introduction to the game. Fun, personal achievement and fundamental skill development are key elements.

Modified rules and smaller teams help give players lots of touches of the ball.

FutureFERNS festival days — like Friday’s event at Victoria Domain — bring young netballers together at their local netball centre to meet their netball idols and get an introduction to the sport.
