You could have been forgiven for thinking the final of Gisborne Bowling Club’s junior men’s pairs was actually the senior section of the event, such was the quality of play.

Eventual winners Peter Ferris and Chris Bunyan and runners-up Mike and John Donnelly put on a show.

In the first game between these pairs, the Donnelly brothers were too good, winning 22-11.

Their second-round game was a complete reversal. Ferris and Bunyan dominated, thanks to outstanding lead bowls from Bunyan. On almost every end he put a couple of bowls on the jack and a handy shot at the back, and he and Ferris won this game 27-4.

A good lead is a great asset to any bowls team, and Bunyan gave a fine example of how to make life tough for the opposition. Mind you, the opposition put up an excellent fight and their bowls were top shelf as well.

The score in the third and final game between these teams was 16-15 to Ferris and Bunyan.

Congratulations to all four players. It was great to watch.

In the men’s senior pairs, Malcolm Trowell and Peter Clay defeated Paul Everett and Andrew Ball 15-14 to take the title. Trowell and Clay had some classy opponents to contend with on their way to victory.

Steve and Shaun Goldsbury, Jeff Davis and George Tamihana, and Boon McIlroy and Tim Sherriff were no easybeats.

All in all, this was a good contest that showed the strength of the club in the senior men’s division.

Ginny Sherriff and Kym Brown won the senior women’s pairs, while Nanette Treloar and Joy McFarlane won the junior title.

These last two events were uncontested.
