A win at Childers Road Reserve tomorrow will take Gisborne Thistle to the top of football’s Pacific Premiership.

But the team they must beat, Eskview United, proved one of their bogey teams last year.

Gisborne Vehicle Testing Thistle lost to them 1-0 away and drew 2-2 at home last season.

Coach Garrett Blair feels he has a much stronger side this season, with players hitting top gear at the right time. This leaves him with the healthy problem of deciding team make-up and tactics.

Coming back into the mix are striker Davie Ure and midfielders Matt McVey and Max Logan.

“The intensity at training has been great,” Blair said.

“The boys know that starting spots are up for grabs every week and that we have good quality in all positions.

“We also need to ensure we keep the momentum going.”

Thistle have a great draw for the remainder of the season, with five out of the last six games to be played at Childers Road Reserve.

The final game of the season will be played away, against Napier Marist.

For Thistle, the equation is easy — win them all and the title is theirs.

Blair puts his side’s success down to the combination of a strong club, a brilliant committee who share a vision, a great team who back each other on and off the field, and supportive sponsors.

Blair is still wary of local rivals Heavy Equipment Services Gisborne United.

“Both Thistle and United are playing great football and will continue to do so,” Blair said.

“This year’s competition could go down to the final day.

“We just need to go out and make sure we play our own brand of football, and keep level heads.

“We know the league is a possibility, but we have to take each game as it comes and focus on that.”

Gisborne United players could be interested spectators tomorrow, as they have a bye.

The match starts at 2.30pm.
