Tahuna Irwin and Mihi Awatere were named senior men’s and women’s players of the year at Gisborne Club Darts Association’s prizegiving at the Gisborne RSA.

Hunter Eyles and Mihimoana Waihape were named junior or youth male and female players of the year at the same function.

Georgie Osborne received the Gisborne Club Darts Association (GCDA) Lifetime Achievement Trophy — the first time it had been awarded. It will be followed up with a lifetime membership award to be presented at the GCDA annual general meeting in February.

Osborne has been playing darts since 1966 and has been a member of the club darts association for over 35 years. At one time or another she has held all the management positions, including the role of regional representative.

Irwin won the Economy Cars Cup for men’s A League singles, the Eric Torrie Memorial Trophy for men’s singles and, with Wietske deGroot, the Denis Rice Memorial Trophy for mixed pairs. Irwin also won the men’s awards for most tons, most 180s and highest finishes.

The Ngerengere Memorial Shield for Team of the Year went to 2NZEF TAO Spartans.

GCDA has seven youth players and two juniors competing in its competition. All nine of them attended the junior and youth nationals in Hastings. Five of them, aged from nine to 16, are on their way to Gibraltar to play in the Junior Darts Corporation World Championship. They are Hunter Eyles, Apirana Taukamo-Pohio, Apanui Kaiwai, Joel Horua and Braydon Pokai-Giddens.

The darts association acknowledged the support of Gisborne Cosmopolitan Club, Gisborne RSA, Gisborne 2NZEF and Roseland Tavern for the local darts competition. The GCDA closing tournament and prizegiving were held on the same day. The Rosebowl Tournament’s A Grade was held at the Cosmopolitan Club and the B Grade, at the RSA. Prizegiving was held afterwards at the RSA.
