Tiny mistakes cost Gisborne trampolinists gold medals at the Midlands regional championships in Rotorua, says their coach Doug Callahan.

A 15-strong team from Gisborne Trampoline and Tumbling Club last weekend won 22 medals — three gold, 10 silver and nine bronze — at the champs.

Callahan said they would be working hard to iron out the small errors before their next competition, in Auckland in June.

James van Aswegen won gold medals in his 13/14-year age group, for trampoline and double-mini trampoline.

Callahan said his form was again good, building on his strong performance at Gisborne last month.

Fifteen-year-old Leah Scholefield won gold in the junior women’s synchronised category with Aucklander Amy Blind.

In tumbling, Capria Tamatea claimed silver in her 11/12-year age group.

“She qualified for nationals in tumbling,” Callahan said.

“She tries hard and has a lot of courage.”

Five Gisborne girls qualified for nationals in tumbling — Tamatea, Lily Rolls, Lily Arnold, Gabrielle Wong and Jade Swann.

Charlie Holdsworth picked up a silver medal on trampoline in the 10-and-under boys’ category and a second silver with Parker Anderson in synchronised.

Callahan said he was encouraged by the performance of Hugo Emerre, who qualified for the nationals in tramp and double mini in his 11/12-year age group.

Arthur Tilghman won silvers for tramp and double mini in the 8-and-under boys.

Callahan said the judging of Gisborne club member Natalya Barber was the subject of many favourable comments among those at the championships.
