Victories for the senior hockey and football teams in Napier got Gisborne Boys’ High School off to a good start in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Winter Tournament Week.

The hockey team, coached by Wade Manson, with Aidan Scragg his assistant, are competing in a New Zealand Hockey satellite tournament comprising teams from the central North Island.

On the first day, Boys’ High beat St John’s College of Hastings 4-0 and Aquinas College of Tauranga 2-1.

Yesterday they drew 2-2 with Onslow College of Wellington. This put them top of their pool and put into today’s quarterfinals.

Sebastian Itman is coaching the senior football team in the Rex Dawkins Tournament, an NZ Football satellite competition of teams from the central North Island. Olly Aldridge is assistant.

Gisborne beat Whakatane High 1-0 on Day 1, then on Day 2 lost 3-0 to Northcote College and trounced Karamu High 11-0.

The GBHS junior football team are competing at the Hillsdene tournament in Tauranga, On Day 1, they lost 1-0 to Bethlehem College, beat St Peter’s 2-1 and lost 5-0 to Hutt International Boys’. On Day 2 they lost 8-0 to Westlake and 4-1 to St John’s. The team are coached by parent Matt Harvey, with the support of Paul Jefferson.

In Palmerston North, the Gisborne Boys’ High under-14 rugby boys lost 42-7 to Hamilton Boys’ High and 35-7 to New Plymouth Boys’ High. They are taking part in the Colquhoun Tournament, which involves the other seven Super 8 schools, and are coached by director of rugby Mark Jefferson and Kahu Falaoa, and managed by parent Peter Crawford.

The u15 rugby boys are in Wellington for the Hurricanes Schools Tournament. They are being coached by parent Richard Brown with support from first 15 coach Duane Hihi. Stella Beach and staff member Barry Ngata are managers.

In Rotorua, the Gisborne Boys’ High junior development basketball team beat St John’s 77-36, and the Year 10s lost to St John’s 110-55.

Three Boys’ High basketball teams are in Rotorua. The junior premier team are in the Zone 2 premier grade tournament, which takes in Waikato and Bay of Plenty, and are coached by parents Quentin Solomon and Matt Tong.

The junior development team are also in the Zone 2 tournament, in the second tier of competition. They are coached by parent Sean Pocock, with support from his wife Sarah and Albie Nepia.

The senior basketball team are completing in the Senior Zone 2 tournament. They are a mix of experienced Year 13 players and younger developing players from Year 11.

They are co-coached by director of basketball Keenan Ruru and Adrian Sparks. Camille Collier is manager.

On the badminton courts in Porirua, Gisborne Boys’ High lost both ties on Monday but came close to winning the first tie. They are being coached by parent Geoff Wright.

Gisborne Girls’ High School’s hockey team had a 3-1 win against Rolleston College of Canterbury in the Audrey Timlin Tournament in Nelson yesterday.

Girls’ High and Campion College are competing in the Upper North Island netball tournament in Hamilton. On Day 1, Girls’ High won both their B Grade games. They beat Aorere of Auckland 53-19 and Sacred Heart 42-14.

Campion, competing in the D Grade, beat Waiheke 41-10 and lost to Waikato Dio Invitational 38-34.

On Day 2, Campion beat Forest View 48-18 and Tamaki 39-27, and Gisborne Girls’ High beat Mt Roskill 54-26.
