Gisborne canoe sprint paddler Alicia Hoskin is headed home after winning her first international medals in the Czech Republic and Poland.

She won bronze in the K2 500m with Olympic great Dame Lisa Carrington at the International Canoe Federation World Cup meeting in the Czech Republic last weekend, and in Poland on Sunday she added one more to her medal tally.

Hoskin was ecstatic to win her first international medals.

“It was so exciting racing crews of such a high calibre,” she said.

“It gave me a confidence boost that we can stick to our race plan even when the pressure comes on.

“It will be exciting to see what we can do as we continue to build and learn together.”

Teaming up with Carrington in the ICF canoe sprint World Cup in Poznan, Poland, in difficult windy conditions, Hoskin, Carrington, Olivia Brett and Tara Vaughan won silver in the K4 500m A final.

They were 1.8 seconds behind a Poland crew, with another Poland four in third.

Strong winds whipped down the Poznan course on day three of the regatta, which necessitated reshuffling and rescheduling the programme for the fourth and final day on Sunday.

The A final went ahead but the B and C finals were cancelled.

Sunday was busy, with the K4 final, then Carrington competing in the K1 500m in which she won gold, followed by the K2 500m final alongside Hoskin.

The pair were fourth, just 0.18secs behind the third-placed Polish combo.

The Poznan regatta was Carrington's second straight World Cup event after winning gold in the K1 500 in the Czech Republic.

Her time was almost three seconds faster than what she recorded on her way to gold at the Tokyo Olympics last year.

Alicia's mother Toni said the team had been away from New Zealand for about three weeks, starting with a camp in Italy where they acclimatised and sorted out their boats.

The team are heading home to Auckland where they will start preparing for the world championships in Canada in August.
