Poverty Bay Senior 1 club rugby kicks off tomorrow with two teams added to the competition.
Due to restricted access to the roads north of Tolaga Bay, Ngati Porou East Coast union club Uawa will be playing in the Poverty Bay Rugby Football Union competition this year.
They are hosting YMP (12.45pm)
in Tolaga Bay tomorrow.
Uawa team manager Jason Matenga said it was an exciting time for the club.
“New opponents and new venues makes it refreshing,” Matenga said. “We have played on the Coast for how many years. The boys are amped for it, excited and are looking forward to the challenge.
“We are a big community club and our community spreads quite far and wide — not just in Tolaga Bay itself. We have one player who travels through from Mahia to play for us and the Coast.”
Horouta are making a comeback to the club rugby scene after dropping out of the premier competition.
Their home ground is Waikirikiri Reserve but their first hit-out is against Tapuae at the Oval at 1pm. The venue was switched from the reserve.
OBM will have a tall task as they are up against defending champions Wairoa Athletic at the Oval on ground 1 at 1pm.
Ngatapa are on the road to face Nuhaka at Nuhaka Domain. Kick-off is at 1.30pm.
