HOROUTA'S latest success at the 2016 Te Wananga o Aotearoa Waka Ama Sprint Nationals at Lake Karapiro was the third in a row. Over six days of competition, 3000 paddlers from 71 clubs and associations contested 388 races.
Horouta finished with 286 points. The other Gisborne waka ama club, Mareikura,
took second place with 146 points, and Ruamata took third place with 136.
Both Horouta and Mareikura are particularly strong in the junior and women’s ranks. Horouta have national elite women’s sprint coach Kiwi Campbell as a paddler and coach, while Mareikura have national development (J19) women’s sprint coach Brightwell at the helm.
Both Campbell and Brightwell are preparing squads for the world sprint championships on Lake Kawana on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, in May.
