The Hawke’s Bay Young Horse Championships gave Gisborne riders an opportunity to showcase their home-bred and self-produced young horses while competing against others of the same age.

Gisborne riders enjoyed much success.

Georgie Coop rode the Coop family’s home-bred horse Murdoch to victory in the class for 4-year-old show hunters. She also rode another home-bred mount, Zola, to victory in the class for 7-year-old show hunters.

Georgie’s parents, Caroline and Diesel Coop, received an award for being top breeders of show hunter horses.

Henry Gaddum also enjoyed a strong show. He placed third in the 5-year-old breeding series championship final showjumping class with his home-bred horse Eye Pinky Promise.

Henry and Eye Pinky Promise were also second in the 5-year-old show hunter championship class.

Fraser Babbington placed equal second in the 6-year-old breeding series championship final on his self-produced horse HCPH Blinky Bill.

The third day of competition featured national series classes, where Cindy Kershaw took out the pro amateur class on Kiwi Vision, while Sofie Gaddum and Sentra finished sixth.

Due to the siting of a flood mitigation scheme, the Wairoa A&P Show in January was the last to be held at the showgrounds on Ruataniwha Rd.

Gisborne riders were eager to attend, and achieved excellent results.

As it was a one-day show with no camping available, Gisborne and Wairoa competitors made up the majority of entries.

The next show for many local riders would normally have been in Te Teko but, with the Waioweka Gorge closed, many Gisborne riders travelled instead to the Dannevirke A&P Show.

Olivia Rau and her pony Let’s Rumble Bumble placed first and second in the Category C show hunter classes.

Chloe Garbett and her pony MJK Halin Park also earned second place in a 90cm showjumping class.

Rose Kershaw had a standout show on Barney Rubble, picking up second and third placings in the Category B show hunter classes. She was also second in the 1m showjumping class, first in the 1.10m class and first in the 1.05m–1.10m class.

Elliot Swanson also had a great show. She and her pony Taylor Made Gift were first in the 1m, second in the 1.10m, and second in the 1.05m–1.10m class.

Isobel Bevitt and Mr Monochrome were second in the 1.10m–1.15m showjumping class.

Georgie Coop placed fourth in the junior rider series showjumping class, while Cindy Kershaw won the 1.20m showjumping class on the final day of the show.

TE TEKO SUCCESS

Lucy Moylan and Zoe McNaught made the long trip around to the Eastern Bay Showjumping and Showhunter Show at Te Teko.

Lucy and her pony Done Deal continued their fine form this season, returning home with a neck full of ribbons. They placed first in the Category C championship, first in the handy hunter, first and third in equitation and third in the Category C highpoints.

Zoe McNaught and her pony Nitro Pandora were also among the ribbons. They were second in the handy hunter, first and second in equitation, and first in the Category C 90cm national series class. On her horse Kiwi Magnum, Zoe also picked up fifth place in the 1.10m showjumping class.

LOOKING AHEAD

Wet weather and road closures caused the postponement of the Larsen Sawmilling Gisborne Showjumping Championships in January. Local riders are now preparing for the rescheduled championships, which are to be held from March 27 to 29.
