GISBORNE adventure racer Gerald Holden and his teammates were expected to cross the finish line at Te Anau this morning in the gruelling Godzone expedition event through Fiordland.
Holden, 41, is captain of the four-man Lincoln Reunion team, who were leading the Pursuit event of the GODZone adventure race that
requires teams to kayak, mountain bike, trek, raft and climb across up to 540 kilometres of unknown terrain.
Lincoln Reunion lost their lead to Team Turiwhate, who went on to win the Pursuit title, completing the race in five days five hours 53 minutes.
Organisers reported that they could see the lights of Holden and his teammates Trevor Hurley (Tauranga), Kym Skerman (Bulls) and Dave Divers (Milton) last night. They were having a decent sleep before starting the final paddle to the finish and a likely second place overall.
The winners of the main event — the GODZone Pure race in which teams did not have a support crew as opposed to the Pursuit teams — were Yealands Family Wines, who crossed the line at 9.40 last night.
