ROB Hayes is Barry Memorial Croquet Club’s new golf croquet singles champion.

The top six players in the club played each other in a round-robin.

Hayes finished the day on seven points, 2016 champion Ross Thomson was on six, and John Wilson and Dave Newton were both on five. Competition was keen, with 11 matches drawn.

Thomson said that Hayes deserved the title because although four players had two wins, Hayes forced one more draw than the others through his steady play.

Christine McCullough was a convincing winner of the B section, with no losses in the round-robin.

Richard Rice and Inadale Elzen both had the same number of wins and draws but Rice gained runner-up spot on countback.

The club doubles championships will be held in March.
