HAWKE'S Bay proved too good for neighbours Poverty Bay-East Coast in the opening round of the men's national interprovincial golf tournament in Northland this morning.

PBEC fell 4-1 to their neighbourhood rivals on the Mangawhai course north of Auckland.

PBEC No.2 William Brown saved the whitewash with a 2 and 1 win over Adam Winter.

No.5 Andrew Higham led early in his match against Russell Mitchell but ended up losing 2 and 1.

No.1 Tini Hawea was beaten 6 and 5 by Ben Swinburne, No.2 Nathaniel Cassidy lost 5 and 4 to Mako Thompson and No.3 Kurtis Cortesi went down 3 and 2 to Tyson Tawera, who earlier this year won the King of the Coast men's open at the Tolaga Bay course.
