Women’s football starts this Sunday with the Hall Family Shield match at Harry Barker Reserve at 12.30pm.

In this match, last year’s champions Campion College will play runners-up Wainui Riverina.

The line-ups for Campion College and Wainui Riverina look largely different from last season. Both teams have lost a fair number of players and are introducing new faces to their teams.

Last year’s champions Campion College lost eight players from their squad as they headed off to university. With this the team has welcomed a large number of new players who are playing in the women’s league for the first time.

For the first time in many years United do not have a women’s team entered in the league.

Their fierce competitive approach will be missed.

Last Saturday, Gisborne United men’s first team beat Wainui Sharks 4-1 in the O’Neill Charity Shield game.

The Eastern League men’s competition starts on Saturday, April 15, followed a day later by the women’s competition.
