THE opening night of the New Zealand Stockcar Grand Prix at the Eastland Group Raceway last night can be summed up in one word — intense.

Nearly 100 cars and drivers from across the North Island battled over three heats of hard-charging action for places in tonight’s Novus Glass finals.

“It was stunning racing, just so fast and furious,” Gisborne Speedway Club president Clyde McGrory said.

The Gisborne contingent will have to back up in the two repechage races tonight in their bid to make the final.

Dana Kingsbeer (83G) was the pick of them.

She went to a run-off to make the finals directly, but missed out.

“However, Dana will start from pole position at the front of one of tonight’s repechage races,” McGrory said.

“She raced very well last night and must be a strong chance of making the final.”

The 24 drivers who qualified directly for the finals were all from outside the district.

They are: 2NZ Tyler Walker, 3NZ Mitch Vickery, 5B Regan Penn, 8B Thomas Rumble Faram, 9S Sheldon Arapere, 9W Bryce Jensen, 14B Jemma Palmer, 15P Luke Miers, 16B Brett Loveridge, 16H James Marshall, 19B Caleb Ireland, 26V Kaelin Mooney, 41B Cameron Swift, 79P Kyle Rowe, 91B Zayne Pullman, 93B Joshua Trott, 95A Gary Lonergan, 96B Brandon Symes, 99S William Hughes, 186R Richard Keizer, 208A Blake Brooks, 272R Seth McConchie, 278P Kyle Taylor and 361H Clinton Cheetham.

Thirty cars will be on the start line tonight in the finals, to be raced over three heats.

“Based on what we saw last night, with such intense racing across all heats, this title could be anybody’s,” McGrory said.

“To add extra incentive for action tonight, we have put up three cash prizes totalling $2000 for the best ‘stirrers’ — the drivers who cause the most contact.

“It’s going to be exciting.”

The V8 super saloons will be in action again tonight in another round of their Heavy Equipment Services DVS Series. They put on a great show of power driving last night.

There will also be another round of the Autotech TQ Masters, who showed tonnes of pace last night.

Gates to the speedway open at 5pm tonight. The first race starts at 6pm.
