History ranked Diana Murphy chances of Kevin Hollis Glass 2015 women’s shootout glory somewhere between rank outsider and not a hope.
That, however, was then, and on Sunday the woman known as “Tuppence” was in the now as she buried ghosts, demons and poltergeists of the past to win the 19-women handicap elimination final.
Murphy found herself standing alongside Colleen Skuse on the 18th tee.
In their wake were 17 casualties of an event that gives amateurs a taste of the pressure those who do it for a living regularly face each week.
The shootout sees 19 qualifiers tee off on the first hole. The player with the worst net is shown the door and if more than one player is tied for the worst score, there is a chip-off or putt-off to decide who exits. The further you go, the more money you pocket.
Only three chip-offs were needed this year – on the eighth, ninth and 11th holes.
Murphy, off a 29-handicap, went through one of those – a four-woman chip-off on the ninth.
By that time, she wasn’t really worrying about if she went out.
“It was just nice to get past the first hole. I didn’t care after that.”
A triple bogey-8 was good enough to survive the first hurdle.
Seventeen tee-offs later it was just her and 22-handicapper Skuse, and Murphy took full advantage of the extra shot she was getting to “make up for the other years”.
Murphy was gracious in victory. She was “shocked and relieved” and put her success down to “other people’s mistakes” rather than her superior game.

Tolaga BayIT ain’t how far, it’s how many. Just ask veteran Joe Lincoln after he upstaged the field, including several big-hitting Lincoln family members to win the men’s shootout final.
Leftie Joe was the last man standing in the annual hole-by-hole net elimination final. Bruce Yates was his final victim.
John Hale only lasted a couple of holes in the shootout final — one more than the previous year — but overcame that blow to the ego by winning the men’s medal on Sunday with 88-23-65.

Each player contributed 39 points for a combined total of 78, two ahead of Karen McDonald and Willie Donnelly.
Walker’s 82-12-70 featured a front-nine of 1-over 37.
The weather is getting warmer and so is the scoring. Wiki Morrissey won the women’s net-minus-stableford on Saturday, shooting 83 off the stick for a formulated score of 68-41-27.
Phil Simpson carded 96-30-66, for 42 points to win the men’s stableford.
A two on the fifth hole highlighted Norm Masters’ men’s stableford-winning 88-21-67, for 41 points, on Sunday.
John Rosewarne posted his best round in nearly four years to win the veteran men’s Tuesday stableford last week. He signed for 94-29-65, for 43 points.
