PERI Gayford picked the right day to produce her round of the year.
Gayford fired 91-27-64, for 46 points, to win the overall stableford at the Bronwyn Kay women’s Christmas Open tournament.
It was the cream of an impressive crop of scores.
Fay Pell was one point behind her after what appears to be her best round at the Bay in over 12 years — 104-39-65.
Marg Lane was third on 44, followed by Rosie Spence on 43, and Jan Steele, Jenny Williams and Te Puia Springs’ Doreen Goldsmith all on 42.
Sue Ellwood’s 21 points was best of the 9-holers.
Dirk Bullivant’s first experience of the Sunday School’s annual trip was a triumphant one.
Fresh from overall glory at the Mahia men’s open, Bullivant topped the stableford standings for the three rounds the SS played in their excursion — this year to Waikato and the Bay of Plenty.
Bullivant, who was as low as a 2-handicapper in his heyday but now bats off a leisurely 11, totalled a modest 101 points but it was good enough for the overall honours.
He was two ahead of Allan White and multiple sporting talent Ray Brott.
The SS crew usually play at four courses on their annual trip.
That was cut to three this year as rain flooded Te Puke course on Sunday morning, the last of their destinations.
The other rounds were at the Phil Tataurangi-designed Tieke Golf Estate, just out of Hamilton, St Andrew’s in Hamilton and Walton, an off-the-beaten-track course described as “the hidden gem of New Zealand golf courses”.
John van Helden had the best individual round of the trip — 78-11-67 at Tieke.
Les Gunther — not having played a full round of golf since the 2021 SS trip — was hot favourite to win the infamous toilet seat trophy for the worst combined stableford.
That was enhanced when he ran out of puff on the physically challenging Tieke course (despite having a buggy) and played only seven holes for six points.
Step up to the plate Dave Hall, who belied his good swing with a 60-point debacle even Gunther managed to beat (by one point).
Fortunately for Hall, there was no official presentation as the “seat” went missing a few years ago.
