The “Tiki Toas” — father and son Shannon and Beau Toa — kept the whanau flag flying high with a 2 and 1 defeat of the “Smoking Rod” duo of Rod Moore and Duane Mauheni.
Shannon went into the match on the back of a bragging rights first-round 5 and 4 win over his fellow Gisborne District Council worker and 2021 Te K partner Josh Taylor and Park life member Ray Grace.
Taking on the Tiki Toas in the quarters will be the winners of the round 2 clash between the Rolls Royces” Steve Rolls and son Zach and the “Carpenepia” combo of club president Wayne Carpendale and Phil Nepia, who blew away “Handicapped Highlanders” Glen McKinnon and Dave Harrison on the 12th in round 1.
Cliff Nepe will have to wait another year to add a second Te K crown to his 2003 triumph alongside Jury Kerekere. Nepe and 2022 partner John Collier Sr, together known as “Master Card”, lost on the 17th to “69ers” Luke Hayes and Derek Craven.
Hayes and Craven are now lying menacingly in wait for the winners of the round 2 clash between “No.1 Deer” team and top seeds Chris Fox and Matt Downie — who are yet to play a match as they had a round 1 bye — and the “Miss Fits” pairing of Paul Wellard and Rob Taylor.
The shootout between “Good, Bad & Ugly's” Ian Loffler and Steve Webb and “2 Vets” Horst Schreiber and Evan Parkin went the way of the Clint Eastwood fans 3 and 2. In Loffler and Webb's quarterfinal gunsights will be the winners of the match between “Shorn Willy's” Shaun Nepe and Charlie Uili and “The Boil-Ups” father and son duo Danny and Zane Boyle.
■ An “amazing” short game was the foundation of Jean Foot's victory in the John Penny women's final on Tuesday.
Foot defeated Barb Woods 4 and 3 in the handicap matchplay final.
Woods, who was getting six shots, was full of praise for her conqueror.
“She was the form player of the tournament,” Woods said. Her short game was amazing.”
Foot ousted Karen Hay in the semifinals last week while Woods beat Linda Brown.
SATURDAY — Women's net: M Sheridan 95-21-74.
WEDNESDAY (June 8) — John Penny women's matchplay semifinals: J Foot def K Hay, B Woods def L Brown.
Eeny meeny, miny, mo . . . the 2022 edition of the Gisborne Motors Barns-Graham Cup men's pairs tees off on Saturday and the infamous “Poison Pen” has opted for a more random prediction approach this year — the dart board.
Thirty-four pairs had entered earlier this week, meaning two will miss out on making the top 32 in Saturday's best-ball stableford qualifying round.
Last year's runners-up Andy Putnam and Brent Colbert would have been high on the favourites list after the former's blazing 44 points on Sunday. But they are not in the field this year.
Reigning champions Andy Hayward and Mark Stewart are, with Hayward showing on Sunday (38pts) that he is tracking nicely for their title defence.
But this is the BG. Rarely does one pair stand out from the rest and when it comes to matchplay, it is dog eat dog.
Anyone could win, even Craig Bauld, who had 15 points for 18 holes (116 not out) last Friday. It was suggested to Bauldie's concerned BG partner, Larry “Steros” Foster, that he was cleaning out the sewer pipes in preparation for a Ninja-like cup assault.
Those likely to be in the mix include Greg Hawea and Thomas Donovan — the latter winning more matches than any other player during the recent Oligoi Jug interclub series — former BG winner Dave Jenkins and Rod Norman and 2021 top qualifiers Glenn “Doctor Phil” Morley and Gray Clapham.
Notable new combinations include father and son Bill and Mike Allen, and former Poverty Bay-East Coast representatives Collin Jeffrey and Peter Goodwin, while among the usual suspects are two-time BG winner Barry Brown and no-time BG winner Ross Gibson, Duncan Bush and Colin Christie, former winners Mike Dodgshun and Brian Clarke, and Sam Willock and Marty Reynolds.
But if the “Poison Pen” was given the ultimatum of choosing a winner or being locked in a room and forced to listen to Brandel Chamblee for 24 hours — and clearly the latter is a torture of worst-nightmare-don't-wish-on-your-worst-enemy magnitude — he would go with Simon Jeune and Dave Hall.
Hall goes into Saturday on the back of a stableford victory double last weekend, both from 39-point hauls. His front nine holes of 39 in Saturday's win featured seven pars, a birdie and a quadruple-bogey 7.
Nick Richardson played the shot of last week — his “smooth” 9-iron-struck ball on the par-3 sixth hole on Sunday finishing an inch behind the hole.
